Acting Workshops

 

JULIE FAIN LAWRENCE, an actress, director and professor at Pace University- Dyson School of the Performing Arts, will conduct three different workshops this summer: SHAKESPEARE’S LANGUAGE, NO JUDGEMENTS, and AUDITION TECHNIQUES.

WORKSHOP 1 – SHAKESPEARE’S LANGUAGE

DESCRIPTION:

Dive into exercises and improvisations aimed at helping participants gain a facility with Shakespeare’s language.

- Text analysis
- Imagery in action
- Status work  
- Iambic pentameter
- Stress/inflections
- Exploring operative words

 

* Scene work and monologues are welcome, but prepared material is not a requirement.

WORKSHOP 2: NO JUDGEMENTS! – UNLOCK YOUR IMAGINATION

DESCRIPTION:
Exercises and improvisations based on the book Impro by Keith Johnstone as well as years of teaching and performing.

- Encourage spontaneity
- Unlock students’ imaginations
- Help participants embrace and realize the power of their individuality  
- The goal is to validate and free up the creative mind. The more you judge the less likely you are to discover.

WORKSHOP 3: AUDITION TECHNIQUES

DESCRIPTION:

Explore “how” to more successfully audition…. From
    -walking into an audition room and introducing ones self;
    -to ones appearance (dress, hair, shoes, etc);
    -to where and how close to stand to those you are auditioning for;
    -to choice of monologues;
    -to ones attitude; “Are you the doctor or the patient”
    -to preparation;
    -to adjusting voice and energy to fit the different audition spaces one may encounter;
    -to “point of focus”  – to whom are you addressing your piece;
    -to looking a casting director/Director, etc in the eye while doing a monologue if asked;
    -to effectively utilizing a “reader”.

 

* Prepared monologues are welcome.

INSTRUCTOR

Julie Fain Lawrence is an actress, director, audiobook narrator and professor at Pace University- Dyson School of the Performing Arts.  She also served as an assistant professor and adjunct for 7 years at Montclair State University and taught Shakespeare workshops in over 85 schools both public and private in the Tri-state area through the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival’s Education Programs.

 

She received her MFA from the Yale School of Drama and her BA from the UCLA Dept. of Theatre, Film and Television.

 

Julie has appeared Off and Off-Off Broadway with En Garde Arts, La Mama E.T.C., HB Playwrights Studio, the Vineyard Theatre, the Ontological Theater-St. Marks Church, Soho Repertory Theatre, HERE and Circle Repertory Lab.

 

Regionally she has worked at the Yale Repertory Theatre, Denver Center Theater Co., Old Globe Theatre, City Theater Co., Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, The Hollywood Bowl, Royce Hall UCLA, and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Inst.

 

Film and Television credits include Fare Well Miss Fortune, Law & Order–SVU, Law & Order–CI, All My Children, Kidnapped, Six Degrees, Third Watch, Bull (pilot). Julie can be seen in the upcoming Independent Feature, Concussion, directed by Stacie Passon and starring Robin Weigert. Concussion will be released through Radius – The Weinstein Company in early fall of 2013.
