IN DARKNESS

From acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland, In Darkness is based on a true story. Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief in Lvov, a Nazi occupied city in Poland, one day encounters a group of Jews trying to escape the liquidation of the ghetto. He hides them for money in the labyrinth of the town’s sewers beneath the bustling activity of the city above. What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. The film is also an extraordinary story of survival as these men, women and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever increasing and intense danger.

Suspenseful, horrifying and at times intensely moving. –A.O. Scott, New York Times

The suspense here, derived from a true story, is excruciating and inspiring in equal measure. –Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

 LA BOHEME

The first opera in our Opera and Ballet in Cinema Series
, from the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

In this ageless classic, four young artists live out their everyday lives amid dreams and disappointments, waiting for the event that is to win them renown – but Fate might have other plans. Puccini's beloved melodies perfectly convey the passion and heartbreak of young love in the most romantic opera ever written.

Conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez
Directed by Giancarlo del Monaco
Starring Ramon Vargas & Fiorenza Cedolins

It’s so powerful…it feels like you’re watching what Puccini was picturing in his mind’s eye as he was writing the opera. – CityArts

THE KID WITH A BIKE

Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the deeply moving new film by the Dardenne brothers (L’enfant, Rosetta) delves into the emotional life of troubled 11-year-old Cyril. When his father abandons him, Cyril obsessively tries to find his bicycle. Almost by accident, he becomes the ward of a kind  hairdresser, a woman who seems surprised to find herself so determined to help him. With his wild, unpredictable behavior and his disastrous search for father figures, Cyril risks losing her—though she refuses to give up without a fight. Full of heartbreaking betrayals and unexpected grace, THE KID WITH A BIKE is a film about a child, abandoned to the elements, learning to become good.
